Many Americans have this day off of school/work but we in Miami do not. Let us celebrate this important day in history when Columbus encountered the Caribbean islands. On this day, Christopher Columbus changed the world forever. He sparked colonization in the New World and began the mass-migration from Europe. In some ways the United States owes Columbus for i's nationhood. Some people like me may see Columbus as a savage person who killed many native islanders in the Caribbean, but either way in America we celebrate him for the movement he sparked.
I think your perspective on the celebration of this day is interesting and important. Maybe other people agree and that's why we don't get this day off any more
